Audirvāna has a high-quality internal digital volume control. This volume software algorithm is processed in 64-bit directly inside Audirvāna and passed through to the output device.
If you do not use this software volume control, the volume you see in Audirvāna is the direct volume of your output, with the value being in dB or percentage.
Audirvāna includes a gradual volume rise when you turn it up rapidly. This gives you some time to react if this leap was not intended. The fastest move is to click to mute the playback.
Note: Depending on your device capabilities, the volume can be disabled.
In this article:
Internal software volume control
We do not enable the internal software volume control by default. When activated, the internal volume will replace the output device volume control in the player, including in the remote app. It performs the attenuation calculations before sending the audio stream to your device.
This can be particularly useful if the connected audio device does not allow Audirvāna to adjust it from the app (greyed-out volume bar).
In this case, you have only one volume control active.
To enable software volume control, you have two options:
- In Audirvāna audio settings:
- In the volume settings:
Note: This feature is only available when your device is connected via USB. When you are connected via UPnP/DLNA the large buffer creates a latency that is incompatible with this service (time lag).
Open the technical mini-player to use both volume controls simultaneously. Please read this article to know more about it.
The software volume is above DAC, and the two attenuations are cumulative.
If you have both volumes available (the one of your device and the internal software volume control) and want to avoid unnecessary layers of processing, it may be best to leave your device's volume at its nominal volume, i.e., at the volume where it does not attenuate or increase (= 0 dB).
Note: remember to turn it down when you leave Audirvāna
Plus/minus step adjustment
The + and - buttons help you adjust the volume level precisely. If you are on a computer, the media keys to increase or lower the volume will control them.
They are set to +/- 0.5 dB by default, but you can adjust them to your needs in the volume settings.
Like the software volume control, you have two ways to change this setting:
- In Audirvāna audio settings:
- In the volume settings:
Maximum volume limit
You can cap the maximum volume if your system plays very loud and you want to limit it:

Replay Gain volume leveling
Volume leveling—or Replay Gain—allows you to listen to music at an even volume, for instance, in a playlist or compilation you have created, avoiding disturbing volume jumps between tracks.
This is achieved thanks to a loudness adjustment value defined for each album or track according to an industry standard (EBU R128 and DR standards) and stored in its metadata. This value is then used to level the playback between different tracks. If this value is for the whole album, it preserves the album dynamics between tracks as intended during the mastering.
You can activate Replay Gain:
- In Audirvāna audio settings:
- In the volume settings:
This value is provided both by Tidal and Qobuz.
The Replay Gain value is sometimes missing from your local library albums or tracks. But Audirvāna can calculate it for you.
Please read this article to learn more about Replay Gain calculation
Maximum volume alert
For safety reasons, there is a max volume alert. If you start playing a track and the volume exceeds 90% of the maximum, a popup will ask you to confirm this is intentional.
You can ask to no longer show this popup by ticking the option when the alert shows up.
Mute audio output
Next to the volume bar in the player, there is a speaker icon. Click on it to Mute the sound.
You can also use the media key on your desktop computer's keyboard.
Another simple way to Mute is to Pause the playback with the Play/Pause button in the Player.
Note: Pausing is not desactivating the exclusive access to the output device. So if you want to change the audio settings for instance, you need to unlock the access by clicking on the lock icon.
