Audirvāna can sync your music with it to access your music inside the software directly. This sync is not making a copy of your tracks; the software reads the metadata of your tracks and stores them in its local database file to have fast access to all your tracks.

Adding your music to Audirvāna

You have multiple ways to add your music to Audirvāna:

• Adding a folder containing your music
• Drag & drop track(s) in the play queue
• [MacOS] iTunes synchronisation

Adding a folder containing your music

Ensure your device containing your music is powered on and available by your computer before syncing it with Audirvāna.

If you use a NAS, add it to your computer as an SMB network drive. If you don't know how to do this, please read the articles:

To sync the folders containing your music, you need to go into Audirvāna Local/Library settings and click "Add a folder":

Once you have selected the folder, click "Open", and the sync of your tracks will start:

When a drive is synced with Audirvāna, each change you make in this drive (add/remove/edit tracks) is automatically applied and will trigger a sync for the drive.

If you don't want your network drive synced each time you restart Audirvāna, you must turn off "Rescan network folders at each start".

Although there is no limit to the number of tracks being synced with Audirvāna (we have users with more than 500,000 tracks synced!!!), You could experience some issues during the sync, such as tracks being duplicated or never-ending sync; in such cases, we recommend you look at the corresponding article in our knowledge base before contacting us.

Note: the sync bar will fill depending the remaining tracks to be synced. If you restart Audirvāna during the sync, it will start where it left, i.e. the bar will not be half filled if you closed Audirvāna at this state of the sync.

To remove a synced folder, you must click on the trash icon next to the path of your folder:

Drag & drop track(s) in the play queue

If you don't want to sync your tracks, you can drag and drop them into the play queue, play them, or add them to a playlist, and they will still be available in Audirvāna.

To open the play queue, you need to click on this icon:

Once opened, you can drag & drop your tracks this way:

Given that Apple makes the iTunes(or Music) software, this type of synchronization is only available on macOS. There are a lot of differences between this type of sync and the folder synchronization:

Sync folder:

Pros:

• You get all the metadata of the tracks, including their artwork.
• The metadata are also editable.
• You can create playlists with the tracks/albums you synced.
• The overall performance of the sync is better than that of the iTunes one.
• If a change is made in your folder, it is automatically synced.
  

Cons:

• Any metadata change you do in the app is also replicated in your track metadata.
• Your folder structure can sometimes create particular behaviors, especially if you do not have an artist's name for an album or track.

iTunes sync:

Pros:

• Every album/track you buy on iTunes is accessible and playable.
• You can access and play all of your iTunes playlists.

Cons:

• Every track and album metadata is viewable but not editable.
• …but you can’t edit your iTunes playlists in the app(Apple API limitation)
• Any track you add in iTunes is not automatically synced (Apple API limitation)
  

To sync the iTunes library with Audirvāna, you need to go into Audirvāna Local/Library settings and click "Synchronize" in the iTunes part:

Note: if you use the folder sync and iTunes at the same time, be careful of duplicates!

To remove iTunes sync, please click "Remove" next to "Synchronize"

As you can see, some tracks couldn't be synced; Audirvāna thus skipped them:

- the DRM-protected tracks (usually files ending with .m4p), due to the copy protection mechanism, like the ones coming from Apple Music

- The iCloud/iTunes Match tracks use an iTunes-specific protocol to retrieve audio data. To get them to play in Audirvana, you need to download all the songs you want to play through Audirvana into your computer library by clicking the cloud icon that shows the album is in the cloud, not the library.

- The tracks are in a Home Sharing library for the same reason (using an Apple non-public sharing protocol). If you are using this, there is a workaround that consists of sharing the audio files on the server (to be able to access them from the Finder on the client's Mac) and then importing the track files in iTunes, or just adding the shared folder to the synchronized list in the Library page of Audirvana preferences. A standard file-sharing protocol is used, and Audirvana can access the audio files.
