How to play to my device as DSD over PCM (DoP)?

When you play DSD tracks in Audirvāna, you usually play them as DoP unless you use an ASIO driver or play them to a DSD natively compatible UPNP device.

Setting my device as DoP

The DSD over PCM standard has been developed to send raw DSD in a fake PCM stream. This standard is used for macOS devices, as the operating system can't send raw DSD streams (the same behavior occurs when using WASAPI or Kernel Streaming on a Windows device).

With DSD over PCM (or DoP), you get only half of the maximum DSD rate your device can use because it adds an 8-bit marker in the DSD playing track, which doubles the need for bandwidth.

Note: not all DACs supports DoP, please refer to your device manual to know if it's compatible

In this article:

Step 1: Access the device settings

You need to click on the icon at the top right of Audirvāna to see your device settings:

Step 2: Enable DoP

There are two options: DoP 1.0 or DoP 1.1. Select the one you want to use, and your device will play the DSD file as DoP.

If you feel the volume of your DoP DSD tracks is too low, you can boost it from 0 dB to +6 dB.

Note: If your DAC has a volume control, you may need to ensure it is set at 100% during DSD playback to prevent its USB interface from damaging the DSD signal.
